An income tax return is lodged annually by nearly all working Australian residents, and those who earn Australian-sourced income. You can check this article here if you are unsure whether you need to lodge an income tax return. This article will explain the key income tax due dates to ensure you stay compliant with the ATO. We will also show you how you can be considered for deadline extensions by lodging through a registered tax agent, such as Airtax.
The Basics
An income tax return period spans from 30 June to 1 July of the following year. There are two deadlines provided in the table, which are:
- The normal ATO deadline - this is relevant for those who do not use a registered Tax Agent (such as Airtax) before 31 October. This deadline will also apply to those individuals who are not granted a due date extension by the ATO.
- Tax agent deadline - this is an extension granted (at the ATO’s discretion) to people who are registered with a tax agent, such as Airtax, by 31 October.
How to be eligible for a deadline extension through Airtax
To be considered for the 15 May extension for a given tax return, just make sure you start the return on Airtax prior to the 31 October deadline. This is completely free to do, and you will be added to our Tax Agent Number with the ATO automatically. You can read more about this here
How to stay across the deadlines
By signing up to Airtax, we will send you a limited number of reminders around the tax deadlines.
